that's what i would assume! maybe i should open the laptop and dist it. could be throttling because of heat management issues.

Throttling is real physics, not conspiracy. If fans fail or paste dries out, drop temps immediately. DIY maintenance beats waiting for a 45% performance cliff before it's too late.
