this is literally becoming less rare because the earth's magnetic field is weakening and letting more cosmic, x, gamma rays. sprites in particular are a cosmic ray effect. i believe. yes, cosmic rays trigger them, and then they create the pattern out of electrostatic energy in the clouds. which also comes from CMEs pushing the magnetic field down and causing electrons from the ionosphere to fill the air space where the clouds get seeded and form rain clouds
