Remember, the American independence day is celebrating the declaration that we were free from of British rule.
The country wasn't actually formed until May 29, 1790, when the constitution was signed....
So... never mind, I guess, that in that very document that declared freedom from British rule, the signees thereof also declared themselves to be "the Representatives of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA"?
