I'm trying to avoid the urge to get cute with gap limits and derivation paths. At least the first pass for many wallets saw even a single gap save future addresses after it. And I'm sure it wasn't checking things like m/79'/3'/7'/60/2.
But using weird derivation paths is one of the quickest ways people have either lost coins or at least made themselves panic for a bit. And it is sort of security by obscurity (though there's a sense in which all of this is, as every utxo is right there if you can only find the key...).
We just use a LOT more obscurity.
