I always hated on DIDs because they are retarded version of DNS, and hated on PLC directory because it is centralized trash because the Blockchain stigma. But the reason your keys will die if your PDS dies is because you never ask the PDS to help you rotate the keys to help you have self custody.... This is mostly user choice, but also Bluesky doesn't exactly nudge users to download any recovery keys. Farcaster is a bit better because users already have wallets like MetaMask so that is already a great selection for users interested in keys.
