Way out of my lane here, but China seems to contradict your thesis - the average Wei’s circumstances certainly improved from 1980 or so to present no?
Because they opened up special economic zones and allowed pseudo-privately owned businesses. Essentially they allowed capitalism in and it changed everything for them.
