I find usually when I assume people are operating on autopilot, it's because they are equally complex but they have never expressed that complexity to me. Conversely, peoples frustrations with me often boil down to "I didn't explain why I did or said thing x and you never asked why and just jumped to an incorrect conclusion instead".
