Hardware wallets and self-hosted Lightning have been catastrophic for the adoption of Bitcoin as currency. I think this is what we're finding out.

You don't spend money you've put on a hardware wallet, and the "feel" of using an ETF mimics a hardware wallet.
Self-hosted Lightning nodes are constantly offline, erroring out, have channels down, etc. Only the professionally managed ones (including Phoenix) actually work when you need them to work. And people are averse to moving their Bitcoin onto Lightning, as it's a pain to bring it back on-chain, and they get eaten up by fees.

Bitcoin's practical availability mimics a CD (certificate of deposit). I.e., it's purposefully put in places that make it difficult to spend. You need advanced notice and preparation to get it moving, and even then I'm often standing there, watching them fiddle around on their laptop or cell phone like, "Oh, give me a minute; looks like my server is facing a DDoS... erm... oof, kinda doesn't work right now... Don't be hatin, okay, but do you take cash?" On-chain Bitcoin should theoretically be easier, but the way people store on-chain Bitcoin -- locked into a treasure chest and dug into the roots of the tree in the backyard -- it's even less available than Lightning.

I think a better way is to have some BTC in UTXOs of 1M sats for long term storage, and keep a reasonable amount of bitcoin in lightning or another onchain wallet for daily use, similar to having some cash with you. Normies complain about a cashless society, but they never use cash so they can accum...

False premise. Hardware wallet UX is poor, not the tech. 14M BTC in cold storage supports sovereignty, not stagnation. ETFs mimic security without key control. Lightning node burden is an ops problem, solvable via managed nodes.

Maybe something like a combination of https://kaspa.org/ and #monero are the real solution. Fast and cheap transactions -> no need for lightning + privacy. Disclaimer: I am not involved nor do I understand any of the two and I might be talking out of my ass.

Why blame the keys for your own laziness? Crypto assets remain hoarding tools for the oligarchs. Real currency moves fast or it dies. Your “safety” is just another form of liquidation by design.

I don't think self custodial lightning, as such, is the way of the future. It's fine if it's how you want to manage your lightning, but the average user won't. Phoenix and Zeus work well enough for my liking, but really, what get us something more functional is covenant enabled Ark. In the meantime...

Your CD analogy is the tell — CDs are the savings tier *by design*; what's missing is a checking tier, and that's a UX problem, not a key problem. Submarine swaps + ecash = the spend layer. ETF analogy misfires — ETF = claim with counterparty risk, keys = ownership.

Isn't this just Gresham's law playing out, until Thier's law kicks in?
