Throwing out my plastic cutting boards and replacing with hardwood.

Was always told plastic is better because you can sanitize in the dishwasher. It seems nobody considered microplastics in food until recently.

Though the worst cutting board I ever had was made of glass.

I replaced all of ours this year. Getting rid of all the plastic storage containers next. Stopped buying anything in aluminum too.

Yes, hardwood cutting boards look much nicer too.
McBit · 61w
Not a bad idea. What boards did you buy instead?
Rog @ SC Bitcoin ⚡UK · 61w
Same. Mostly bamboo now. Also apparently the plastic ones don't sanitise as well as we think.

I've never used them, because I don't like the cutting sensation. My wife preferred them until I learned that she's using them because sanitary reasons and pointed out that plastic boards are much better place for bscteria then wood. Glass is the best cutting board if you absolutely hate your eardrums, why people get them befuddles me

We lost a huge oak tree this year - probably at least 100 years old 😢. It's a red oak, so not great for some things (roof shingles, for instance) but could be perfect for other projects. I'm wondering if we could make some beautiful cutting boards.

Bidirectionally laminated bamboo is ideal. It's very hard and being laminated keeps it from splitting over time like typical end grain cutting boards.

Kudos 👏—very smart! By the way, if you ever need some extra cutting boards contact nostr:nprofile1qqsrat92w6pjd47uaq8kact6mgveh6l8av7p5c9nnv2wpfvthtrxleqpr3mhxue69uhkummnw3ez6vpj9eukz6mfdphkumn99e3k7mgpp4mhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mqpr3mhxue69uhkummnw3ez6vp39eukz6mfdphkumn99e3k7mg7qjn5y (solid, unique...

I'm about to start living with my gf and we have to buy our whole inventory still so I want to do it right from the start. Do you have any tips on what to look for when buying a cutting board?
TythePhoneGuy · 61w
I'm curious... What's the best way to clean/sanitize them? Also, about 30 years ago, I worked as a meat cutter in a grocery store. Our tables were made from wood and we had an open air area, too, so it wasn't refrigerated like most are today. We cleaned the tables with soapy water every day. The ta...

Highly recommend end grain wood cutting boards. I’ve made a few for myself, conditioned with food grade mineral oil and coated with a mixture of beeswax/mineral oil for a nice water repellant coating. With proper care these will last a lifetime. https://m.primal.net/NdkW.jpg

I endorse this position 💯

Been using wood for ever. Glass is the devil spawn for cutting boards
Henny B · 61w
Keep one or two if you're in a pinch. For certain applications like nuts chocolate cheese cilantro etc just lay a couple paper towels down

Good rule of thumb is use as little plastic as possible. The problem is it’s deeply embedded in a lot of things.

Oof I probably should do the same. Do they make a thin wooden board with a grippy back?

Annoyingly, wood is a plant and thus potentially toxic. Is there a better solution?

Plastic is the worst by far. Microplastics + food is a terrible combo. Glass is terrible for your knives and will dull your edge in no time. Steel is a terrible choice as well for the same reason as above. Bamboo is too hard and will dull your edge quickly too… Good old wooden end grain cuttin...

Good. Now take a look at your textiles. Then take a look at the particles floating around in your rooms. Many of them are plastic that you breathe in and that crosses the blood-brain barrier.
Goody · 61w
I have always got bamboo, but I have not figured out a way to keep them from warping over a few years time. I try to keep them washed and dried off as best I can, but they always warp and even pull apart in layers over time. I even bought some special oil for them and conditioned them, but it doesn'...

I’m horrified at the thought of how many plastic cutting boards are used at restaurants I’ve eaten at. I pretend it is zero.
Gabe Higgins · 60w
Yes. However, wood chips as well. so is having microwood particles substantially better or at least less harmful? I legit don't know.
Chester · 59w
We have some plastic ones too and opted for that route due to the dishwasher benefit as well. We have some wooden ones too. I agree the glass ones were the worst and dulled my knives. The microplastics rabbit hole is deep.
