Did people disappear from Nostr when bitcoin went down 30%? Seems fickle.

New people don’t get much engagement because established users don’t follow new people so they leave. They feel like they are talking into the void (because they do). Even commenting on notes doesn’t get you that many followers.

This is why it’s so critical for Nostr to grow or it may very well die. Without new people, the number of users will shrink over time. You need relatively new folks to engage with other relatively new folks because they’re more likely to follow each other and stick around.

I just wanted to make sure it wasn't my imagination. I try to be here every day even if I don't have profound things to say or am feeling argumentative.

Completely agree with this

Not only that but my profile shows I have 2 followers but my notifications show way more so I’m not quite sure what’s going on with it.

When I first showed it felt like this but soon I realized engagement was key. So I started commenting on notes and commenting to others notes within. This helped me a lot and am now adventuring outside the bitcoin ecosystem, through hashtags and key words. Not sure this helps but it helped me.

Thanks for the reminder. Gonna try to step up my game again. I haven’t noticed as many #introductions notes lately. It’s fun to greet and meet. 🤙

I guess I'd say that besides a more built-in algo feed, so I was seeing interesting stuff, what you describe was my experience on Twitter from like 2011 - 2019 or so. And, I don't think I broke 100 followers until a couple years ago. Almost a decade of grind before I really felt like I was a part of...

Definitely a cold start problem and mix in various points of friction (like relays being one), and yeah it can make retention tough. Those would be good opportunities for someone to build on.

isn't this a natural problem with people in general, even offline? no one who is famous or thinks that they are goes out and talks to a lowly plebeian on the street.

Popularity is a winner take all market. If we really want freedom, this is what it is. Darwinian.

Totally agree — exactly my experience as someone new to this platform. Completely different from all my previous experiences with other social media.

Yeah this is really accurate. I’ve purple pulled a couple people and they’ve all left in short time because it feels like there’s nobody out there. 🤷‍♀️

It does seem like those who recruit to nostr just tell people to 'post' rather than show them how to use it, and show them for specifically how it could help them. I'm hear to communicate with people in STEM, and learn, but finding people in the sea of the "G M", "P u r e V i d a", and variations ...
