Another weird thing about this section on ethnic minorities in Iran & the human rights abuses they face.
On page 2 of the book, in the introduction, Benjamin opens a paragraph: "Iranians, we learne...
Later in the same paragraph she says "Yes, they are Muslims, & overwhelmingly Shia Muslims, but they celebrate ancient Zoroastrian holidays—to the dismay of conservative clerics."
This paragraph is describing "Iranians," & she says "they are Muslims" as though that can be said as a blanket statement. Not "x percent are Muslim", not "the majority are Muslim."
To get grammatical for a second, the antecedent of "they" here is "Iranians". She just said "Iranians are Muslims."
Hmm.
