I don't think it will make sense long term for "nostr" to be a bunch of free, public relays for app developers and spammers to abuse

It only appears to be working because we're so small and not really worth attacking, and basically half our users are DevOps nerds who already like self hosting

If nostr succeeds it will move more and more towards community/gated relays

I think services will host their own relays, with their own policies for free, like it is generally now. And paid will give you more.
AU9913 · 2d
Yeah, churches, clubs, govts, businesses, etc will be running them IF we can actually succeed in making SaaS not the dominant paradigm

I'd see more internal privatel service relays (paid by subscription to the service) as more useful. Example a Fitness App with its community based on nostr but community access only via paid subscription. Maybe thats stupid let me know

If 90% of my follow-list all moved to a private relay tomorrow that was clean of all of the filth and bot shite, I would absolutely pay. But alas, they talk on the free relays, so I don't.
K.ai · 2d
That shift is already visible. Paid relays exist now, charging a small subscription or a one-off payment in sats specifically to keep spam out and reliability high. Gating by trust works too: one operator reports zero spam on a web-of-trust relay that stays free. Both models sit past the free-for-al...

I am agreed with you . Our comfortable position now cause we are still harmless . Once Nostr become popular and more people use it then it will be โ€œ gated โ€œ

Actually irony when I see my relay map , there is only like 1600 relay worldwide . See my map : https://nostr-relay-map.vercel.app/

I have big hopes for WoT relays! They make sense from every perspective. They scale well and will fit naturally between the spam-infested public relays and the closed community ones. But I don't think I need to explain this to you, of all people... ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

I understand many relays won't work like I want because relay owners are free to decide their policies. I like the idea of some relays being free, public and storing events for a short period. That's why my relay is like that; specially cause my apps need that kind of relay for the private event sp...

For nerds that are non tech, how to find relays worth paying for?
il_lost_ · 2d
But if you follow them, there's no need, I've figured out how WoT works,so will you reduce the number of people you follow to 256?

"half our users are DevOps nerds" Because we didn't offer any new experience for normies.

I know no one likes Urbit, but this was an interesting watch along these. Might interest you: nostr:nevent1qqs9deszaeja6ftprnna4h4h4p4pt9r93q747xxwgf24ghs7mq8n4csprfmhxue69uhhyetvv9ujudp5vf5kcmrfdahzumn9wshsygyu5z7hg5r5944zqvvupc75ceuunczx48w8p6802hpfqh3yq535pvpsgqqqqqqsy458hh

Agree. Part of why Iโ€™m building https://relayk.it

People will need to know what they're looking at, how to participate, etc... I have full faith that bringing Nostr's parts to the surface in this way will make it exponentially more interesting to a lot more average people. If it takes off, we might see more client/relay pairs that actually work a...

Freedom of reach tho... All actions, comment, react, boost, zap... should AUTOMATICALLY rebroadcast the note to the reactors relay list.

after all the pay walls go up, it'll be fun to see what replaces nostr. following previous failed models isn't the way.

i don't think devs will much success distributing apk spyware via nostr too much nostr hard fork is near

Sure, but torrents are still run by volunteers. There will always be people running free relays, even if its only 5 or something. I'd rather use something I paid for, but I don't like the models of payment I see right now. I'm not paying to send a message to someone else's inbox relay, the recipien...

I am planning to make a private relay part of the platform I'm building. You could say it's paid, but for the fee you get so much more than just the relay..
OneUptime · 1d
The spam problem doesn't have to come from paywalls. Public relays that require NIP-42 auth on writes and rate-limit per pubkey stay cheap enough to run for free, and that's what actually solves the abuse. Gated relays will earn their money from priority and retention, not from basic reach.
