Ok #dogstr dog owners, I've got a question!

We've had a heat wave and it's the first Southern heat wave Princess Aurora has experienced. She's developed the strategy of, if I don't drink anything then I won't have to go outside to pee!

She's getting a bit dehydrated as a result. Yesterday I was able to get her to drink but she still refused to go pee outside. She ended up having an accident inside and today she seems more determined to not drink.

Otherwise she ate breakfast and seems to be in less pain so I do think she's on the mend. I just want to make sure she's not getting dehydrated. Right now I have metal bowl and plastic bowl of plan water. Also a cup of beef broth water. I just tried smearing some peanut butter in the cup with water.

Any strategy suggestions?? It should cool off starting tomorrow so hopefully this behavior will simmer down too 😭

Lucie prefers ice cubes in her water in the dead heat of summer. But I’ve never had to beg her to go outside…

Take her to river, let her get in the water and realize the water is the escape. Let her drink the river, then she will prob snap out of the water bad cycle.

A wet towel laid on the floor for them to lie on can help keep them cool, which reduces panting, which reduces dehydration. Not every pet will be interested in doing this, but one of my cats, in particular, has really taken to it.

Add ice cubes to the water bowl (many dogs find it more interesting). cold, diluted low-sodium bone broth. water rich foods (watermelon, cucumber, wet food, ice treats). Take her outside very briefly during the coolest part of the day (early morning/late evening).

Yeah I've never really worried about my dog being hydrated enough. He drinks when he's thirsty & sleeps in the gaps (he's at least 16 yrs old). The only time he's ever been dehydrated was the first time he's had a paralysis tick on him. I don't know whether ticks are a thing where you live but I'd...
