Ubuntu is a derivative and the stability is nowhere close to Debian. I used it for a while and it definitely gets included in my "irresponsible to recommend to noobs" list.

I think most Linux people think shiny desktops are the most noob friendly option. Dead simple reliability is the real key to noob friendliness.

Fair enough, I'll admit I've never used Debian directly and have always used Ubuntu or Ubuntu-based distros. Tbf though, it's usually been apt that's blown up my system.
