Not that surprising as I live in France which is also modern secular.

I know the US is a lot more religious than France, but I still feel like a secular history and ritualistic (Christian-compatible) spirituality is probably the best way to move forward because firstly it doesn't ask atheists to start believing in something, and secondly it doesn't ask sectarian Protestants to switch their alignment.

If you step out of Christianity into post-Christian atheism (so-called "post-Christian" because it retains Christian culture and morality), then a relatively obvious factual statement: "Christianity is the culture of Our People", basically says the same thing.

Nobody is going to try to claim Christianity was invented in Africa and then Africans came to Europe and converted Europeans... That just makes no sense, it's something which evolved in the context of Europeans.

That doesn't make much sense re France. France in this era at least does not have anything resembling a 2 party system, it has a chaotic bunch of different parties with some coming and going from time to time. Also the Le Pen family in particular has a reputation for not liking Jews. Also the thing about "freedom to plunder" is really not a value in France.

Take away a German's freedom and he becomes very upset. Take away a Frenchman's freedom, he doesn't know it's lost because he doesn't follow the rules anyway. But take away a Frenchman's quality of life and he'll be in the street...

France has a lot of big problems, but it doesn't work like the US or England.

He's gonna be gone soon so he doesn't have much reason that he would be motivated to do anything. And there isn't a whole lot he can do, most French people - at least the ones in these cities - are pretty much on the side of the rioters here.

Le Pen is probably gonna get elected - by people who do not live in those cities - and she can send in the army to stop the rioting, but it's gonna be like Trump sending ICE into Chicago, the people in those cities will throw a tantrum over it.

For her, the move might make sense to project authority early in her presidency, for him in his lame-duck session it doesn't really make any sense, it can only potentially backfire and destroy his (already unimpressive) legacy.
