It’s no good to be miserable all the time, serious, dour, stressed out.

You aren’t “paying more attention” than everyone else. You aren’t treating the horrors with necessary gravitas by refusing to create and share in joys.

Even machinery needs lubrication to keep functioning, rather than grind metal-on-metal and break down. And you are no machine.

Did you commit yourself to more than you could fulfill?

Did people rely on you for something that you let them down about?

But down the whips and thumbtacks. If you still can do some, do some. And communicate how you failed to do all.

Mainly, realize that it’s better to say, “No, I can’t,” or “Ask me again later,”
rather than say yes. Since your actual capacity rather than optimistic capacity is the most useful thing for others to know when they’re trying to figure out what they can rely on.
