In those two early renderings, it was skinny as it represented the variety of eggplant common in Japan. The “phallic” shape is therefore correct, much in the way that SWEET POTATO 🍠 should represent a Japanese variety and not the flavorless garnet yams common to American use.

Genmoji sadly renders eggplants as Western aubergines.
