derivation paths are still the silent killer. seeds are standard now, but where the coins actually sit isn't. seen plenty of people 'lose' funds just by switching software or forgetting a passphrase

Say more about losing funds by "Switching software".

One of my concerns is losing funds because of failure of software to be maintained...one can say "oh, it's open source", cool bro, me or an AI or someone is still going to have to go fix code to make software work to recover funds if something doesn't get maintained.

Because branding requires you to spread out & bitcoiners are blockchained together!

Coldcard doesn't know how they had a data leak that released the addresses of their customers.

So...argument to be made for just using a computer/phone

I think there is a lot to be said about "properly securing it", every proponent of bitcoin I've come across the last decade glosses over that.

And they don't want to say more because they think it'll give them away or whatever. "properly securing" seems neither obvious, or easy.

What will NOT decentralize in the coming years/decades?

Recently I've taken more of an interesting in sports of all types. For years I had ceased to care. Now I find them useful for understanding culture, for thinking, and for clarifying execution strategies (though admittidly this last one I'm going just based on vibes)

Some things regarding space seem to have more trouble decentralizing.

Global tournaments for example, seem to be quite difficult to organize and execute on a grass roots movement.

The metaverse seems another one.

What do you think?

Streaming platforms and video platforms require so much bandwidth and storage and have so much demand that it's hard to believe they could be fully decentralized. Just look at Odysee, they host their own servers too.

The idea that a mascot must always be an animal is something corporate institutionalized because people are the consumers. Any idea that a mascot could be a person is usually shunned also things change nothing stays the same forever. A purple ostrich mascot forever that would be tyrrany. People use...

You can multi-sig just fine by yourself :) There are a number of wallets that make this quite easy now. I started as an investor 9 years ago and now have lived fully on the Bitcoin standard for 3 ye...

Losing my money because of keyloss, theft, or just weird tech/unforeseen things..

How much work (or cost) is UTXO management for someone who wants to put in as little work as possible?

What other things must I consider to avoid loss of funds, or large losses of funds?

consolidating utxos when fees are sub-10 sats is the only work needed. coldcard is the floor. multisig for large amounts. use phoenix for mobile. physical seed backups only. test the restore.

Everybody's needs and setup is going to be a little bit different, but following a few guidelines will have you safe. - Multisig is good. Use it. - Passphrase is good. Use it. - Use a trusted hardware wallet (Coldcard is good, Ledger is very bad). World-class cryptographers and engineers have ...

As for worrying if the tech will go out of date, not a problem. All devices adhere to the Bitcoin protocol and are completely interchangeable. Given the right keys, you could restore the wallets of Satoshi Nakamoto on today's hardward with no problem.

Well, its still basically those two options if you want to self-custody, and from a technical point of view, I'm not sure its possible to have a better way without extending trust to a third party... So for example, you can do multisig with BitKey, and they will store one Sig on your phone and anoth...
