That's the thing, no one has an idea. We don't know the true nature of our own consciousness and we don't know how to even approach researching that because our own perception of what we call reality is all we know. We can't step "outside" of our own subjective experiences to take a third-person look. We are trapped here.
It might be the mainstream view that consciousness is indeed an emergent property that arises solely from the brain's physical makeup, that exists fully within the framework of our known laws of physics.
But it might as well be that consciousness, not spacetime, is the fundamental layer of the universe, and our perceived reality is our own collective hallucination of sorts.
I give a 50% chance of being true to each of these theories.
