We aren't a VPN in the traditional sense, we're a 2-party relay, which is different from "multi-hop" offered by traditional VPN providers.
Multi-hop has little to no actual benefit for the trust problem we're trying to solve. In most cases, you're just routing through two servers controlled by the same provider, adding latency while still trusting the same company with both sides of the connection.
A 2-party relay is fundamentally different.
With Obscura:
You → Obscura → Mullvad → Internet
Obscura operates the first hop. We can see your IP address, but your traffic is end-to-end encrypted to Mullvad, so we can't see where you're going.
Mullvad operates the exit hop. They can send your traffic to the internet, but they don't see your real IP because the connection comes from Obscura.
So instead of trusting one VPN provider not to connect "who you are" with "what you're doing", those two pieces of information are split between two independent parties.
Neither party has the full picture.
