NEW UPDATE: The Taraia Object Expedition has been postponed until 2026.
The delay stems from ongoing permit approval processes requiring additional clearance from the Kiribati government, and the onset of the South Pacific cyclone season, which poses safety risks for a late-2025 departure.
UPDATE: The expedition will start on November 4, 2025
A joint team from Purdue University (where Earhart worked in the 1930s and which funded her plane), the Purdue Research Foundation, and the Archaeological Legacy Institute ispreparing for a three-week expedition to investigate the site.
The Kofun tombs, preserved for over 1,600 years, are now surrounded by modern-day Osaka.
The colossal keyhole-shaped Daisen Kofun is specifically oriented toward the sunrise at the winter solstice.
It is one of the three largest ancient tombs in the world, alongside the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt and the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor in China.
