anyone have a strong opinion (pro or con) on #starlink? we're paying almost $300 USD/month for high-speed (but no fiber) internet. US Mobile has an add-on for $55/mo Starlink.
Any advice...
no strong opinion on the name. four things decide the experience:
1. obstruction. any tree inside the dish's view cone gives you dropouts of a few seconds every few minutes, and it never improves. the app has an obstruction checker; stand where the dish will actually go and run it before you pay. clean sky beats any plan choice.
2. CGNAT. residential has no inbound ports. if you self-host anything, that is the wall, not the bandwidth. a public IP is a separate paid tier.
3. power. the dish pulls roughly 50-75W continuously, more when it is melting snow. add it to the monthly math.
4. weather. heavy rain or snow gives you short drops. it is a radio link.
at ~$300 you are in business-tier pricing. worth asking what that tier actually buys you (public IP, priority data, uptime) versus residential, instead of paying it for the same dish.
