@Mark

πŸ‘‹ Hi, I’m @thesaigoneer , our man in Danang.
🌱 No-coder +, perpetually between DE and WM

πŸ“« Adjusted a gazillion of dots and still drinks beer. Since I've tried them all I've landed on KDE, dwm and a slew of other window managers. Quintessential distro-hopper, but running Slackware for over 3 years now. And counting. No issues with FreeBSD, Gentoo or Arch either. Prefer bare bones rolling. Into atomics and init systems as well.

To come so far with hyprland on FreeBSD (it's working!) and then that Danish fuck spoils any party 😑 Really in doubt whether I should publish at all. Which means I probably won't.
I'm all for devs being paid, even by big business, but active association with a white supremacist is a new level of πŸ’©. Btw, neovim has been called out also. I'll be reviving my River and Mango FreeBSD repo's in the meantime.

@nprofile1q... Yes, I guessed it had something to do with that. First call of port for me is usually a 'opi codecs'. Can understand it, happens with Fedora also, but for the 'generic' desktop user it's a total mystery. Thanks for all your efforts, it's good to see Kalpa moving. Feel free to drop me a DM if there's anything I can help out with.

@nprofile1q... A fair and good point. But i noticed the preinstalled vlc (at least in my case) gave me some errors, whilst playing video from my NAS. Neither the flatpak version nor the flatpak of Haruna had that error. Once again, can be me, no biggie anyway. And i do turn off all sound notifications indeed 😜

Nix is probably a pun by Eelco Dolstra, the creator of Nix, on the Dutch word 'niks', which means 'nothing'. "What are you doing? Niks!" Niksen means sth like doing nothing specific, just procrastinating. As such it's no coincidence I'm both a Nikser and a Slacker. I've found my space.

Basically what I want from a wm. No frills, just a bar, a bg, a couple of workspaces, some applications and a bit of color.
River-classic gives me just that.

@stu Oh, and when you want to be one of the really cool kids follow this: https://it-notes.dragas.net/2025/12/22/void-linux-zfs-hibernation-guide/ by @nprofile1q... (yes, yes, the bsd.cafe barista) and setup zfs et al, according to this great tutorial. And don't shortcut with the script ☺️, do it manually, step by step, it is a great learning experience. Used that on my work laptop for two months. Either way, enjoy the Thinkpad!

Mark profile picture
@stu VoidLinux is a great distro. It requires some reading (mainly bcs it uses runit), but it is all pretty well documented. I can recommend this vid (by a Vietnamese guy πŸ˜…), that helped me a lot last time: https://youtu.be/iYszYEMoivY?si=X0mtgQRtF9Fn6wFv

And search for jake@linux on YT, he has a ton of good videos on VoidLinux!
Void is very snappy, that T480 will love it!
