Got two Turing tables and some microcode.

I work on back-end server-y type stuff at a place that keeps rockin' the free web. I like rust, python, and horrible puns (not necessarily in that order).

I tend to be nice for selfish reasons (I don't like hanging out with jerks).

P.S. my old instance soc.jrconlin.com was accidentally murdered. This is my new box if you're wondering why I went radio silent all of a sudden.

Oh god, no one should ever put me in charge of anything (and not just for Groucho Marx reasons).

Leadership is a skill, and it's not one that's easily learned. Everyone's job is hard. Honestly, my main complaint with a lot of folk in leadership roles (not just at Mozilla, mind you, but other companies and organizations) is that far too many of them do not want to learn from the company's history. Maybe they feel they might be influence by older, bad ideas. Maybe they feel that "a fresh start" is what's needed. Maybe, they realize they're just temporary and they want to make as big an impact as they can in the limited time they have. Maybe they're just that busy.

As someone who studies history, though, it makes me sad, because I keep seeing the same patterns.

So, yeah, please do not put me in charge of anything. I don't have the managerial skills for it. I am, however, willing to be the five-year-old advisor.

I am leaving mozilla

It was the best place I ever worked, along with some of the smartest, kindest people who I will miss dearly, but there comes a time when you have to leave.

Because Mozilla has traditionally been very transparent about what it does, it can make people believe that they have insight into all the decisions and outcomes.

I do not fault folk for thinking that way (it's human nature, see information bias), but I do encourage folk to remember that we only see a small percentage of anything, and it's important to remember that we all have strong opinions.

Had an interesting discussion with a colleague about AI.

Companies investing in AI are seeking to turn software development to manufacture code. They look to adopt a factory model to generate software focused on producing features, using automation and reducing the number of "skilled" workers to a small team.

Traditional software development is more craftsmanship.  It's slower, but more thoughtful and there's generally a reason it costs more. It's also where there can be a lot of creativity and innovation.

What I found really interesting, is that thinking about AI as Manufacturing is really interesting to me. The reason that the US is so far behind right now is because we have lost our Tool & Die industry. That's work that you can't automate, and it generally tends to be more of a craft, since you're not producing hundreds of dies. China is particularly good at Tool & Die, which is why all manufacturing now happens there.

Senior Devs are the Tool & Die of Software. We're not replacing them as they leave.

Again, all of this is both sad and hilarious to me. We USA folk keep trying to find new ways to self sabotage.

That's why we rarely write the same software twice. That's why writing software is a craft. But, the key word here is "development". Cr...

This Is The Year Of Linux On The Desktop Because It's The Only OS That Will Run On The Ancient, Underpowered Rig That I Am Now Forced To Use Because I Prioritized Having A Home Instead Of Low Lag Rates.

I also expect the next Assassin's Creed to be set in Stardew Valley, pretty much for the same reason.
