There are many reasons to run a lightning node on a VPS.

Aside from those, not everyone is or wants to be a sysadmin.

What you are describing is StartTunnel (WireGuard). If you are going to rent a VPS anyway, it is generally safer to run the node on the VPS rather than at home.

Virtual Private Node v0.4.2 is live.

Every time you create a Lightning invoice, you're revealing your node, your channels, and your UTXOs.

Sovereign finance means low fees, instant settlement, private transactions, and your Node to verify it all. Bitcoin + Lightning delivers all four at the lowest hardware cost. Virtual Private Node is Free and Open Source Software that runs on any computer. A virtual server means you never have to think about physical hardware or exposing a home IP address.
