UK Government has been hollowing out real policing and funding mass surveillance. They've cut investigators, blame encryption for their failure then demand backdoors instead of funding actual police work.

This isn't about safety. It's policing on the cheap at scale. No warrants. No oversight. Just dragnet scanning.

I think its institutional retaliation for Snowden. The intelligence apparatus was exposed doing exactly this in the dark: bulk collection, warrantless access, dragnet surveillance. Now they're trying to codify it into law. Reform the covert into the legal.

Since then, the internet did what it should have. SSL went universal. E2EE became default. Zero-knowledge architectures hardened the infrastructure. Governments have been furious ever since.

Every "going dark" hearing, every "responsible encryption" speech, every child safety ultimatum is the same argument wearing a different mask.

The UK's Investigatory Powers Act already gives sweeping powers. Now they want device-level scanning and mandatory ID checks. Each step justified by rotating emergencies raised and lowered into British public discourse.

I think we need to defend and protest our rights. The public just shrug and seem prepared to accept that privacy is just a temporary illusion revocable whenever the Government wishes.

That certainly seems to be the reason they gave. I only skimmed the article and report, but it sounds like they took issue with more than just the grammar and writing style. They didn't seem particularly fond of the content or conclusions either.
