Sir Jonathon Porritt, advisor to King Charles III for 30 years before he was crowned, was arrested under the UK Terrorism Act outside Westminster Magistrates Court on Thursday 30th July.
As police escorted him away he said “I am a supporter of Palestine Action. Trying to save lives is not terrorism. Exposing this Governments complicity in genocide is not terrorism.”
The video has amassed millions of views on social media, with political and media figures outraged at the arrests of Sir Jonathon alongside 152 other peaceful protesters. They had been at the court because their names were listed for court hearings for 2025 “terrorism” arrests after holding pieces of paper in Parliament Square to oppose the proscription of direct action group Palestine Action.
Saving lives is not terrorism.

OK. You can see that the top 10% of people produce nearly 50% of global CO2 emissions.
So look at the emissions of the top 1%. Now, we know that Taylor Swift produces about 9,000 tons of CO2, but on average our uber rich friends produce 95 tons of CO2. Now, as they are famous celebrities, some people think they should get a pass on pollution as they fly over the current wildfires, on their way to the poodle groomer.
Now add the emissions for the remaining top 9%. They produce an average of 20 tons CO2.
The middle 40% (that's you and me) produce about 6 tons of CO2 (that's excluding those of us who cruise and take lots of long-haul flights).
The bottom 50%, overwhelmingly from the global south produce less than 1 ton of CO2.
So, tell me. What is wrong with taxing private jets and yachts VERY heavily - say $100 a litre (rather than being tax deductable, as they are now).
They are the one's producing the pollution and they can afford to pay for the consequences.

It took 2 years to build this size of Direct Air Capture (DAC) plant in Iceland which sequesters CO2 out of the air.
It runs on (free) geothermal energy.
It will apparently capture the equivalent ...
I had a chat/debate with a guy about this, and the info is:
- it costs 2.4 kWh per kg of CO2.
- there are 18 of these in the world, and the largest can sequester 8,000 tonnes pa.
- to operate at scale, it needs to be able to process billions of tonnes. So, it would have to scale to 12,760,000%
- for 1 Bn tonnes of CO2 the energy cost would be the same as for the whole energy usage of all of the EU combined.
On the other hand, simply planting trees won't fix this. Too little, too late.
The only realistic scenarios are to
- immediately halve our energy consumption.
- insulate so we don't need as much energy.
- produce as much energy as we can ourselves (solar, etc.)
- Then to use as many renewable as possible to the supply of the remainder.

I have a horrible feeling that a lot of people look at forest fires, floods, record heatwaves, etc., and think, "This is how it's going to be from now on."
It's not. We're still pumping CO2 into the atmosphere, where it's accumulating.
The future is going to be much, much worse. Unless we take drastic action now.
