The Bloat – OP_RETURN swells from 80 bytes to 100 KB from release of Core V30. Direct support for CSAM, arbitrary junk, etc, more attack surface.

The Gloat – Spammers, trolls, and bad actors brag about abusing Bitcoin’s permanent ledger with CSAM.

The Smote – Mainstream media attacks Bitcoin due to CSAM on the blockchain and calls on governments to act. Regulators and courts strike node runners, miners, and service providers hosting the bitcoin blockchain.

The Choke – Node operators shut down to moral/legal pressure and risk. Miners are forced to implement monitoring and transaction filtering policies.

The Broke – Trust fractures, Bitcoin’s decentralization weakens, censorship resistance is broken and the network risks legal and social breakdown.

ECDSA can't encrypt messages, only sign signatures.

It would be unwise to have permanently recorded plaintext messages for everyone to see. It would be an accident waiting to happen.

If there's going to be a message system, it should be a separate system parallel to the bitcoin network. Messages should not be recorded in the block chain. The messages could be signed with the bitcoin address keypairs to prove who they're from.

#btc #bitcoin Knots on Start9 custom Bitcoin configuration steps to limit damage from Core DDoS attack.

You will have to repeat this every time you upgrade to a new version of Knots for custom parameters that aren't in the Knots configuration UI.

SSH into your Start9 server and issue the following commands to add custom parameters to your bitcoin configuration.

Replace the version of Knots in the path as appropriate

It is a good practice to make a backup copy of your configuration template

sudo cp /embassy-data/package-data/volumes/bitcoind/assets/28.1.0.2/compat/bitcoin.conf.template /embassy-data/package-data/volumes/bitcoind/assets/28.1.0.2/compat/bitcoin.conf.template.original

sudo nano /embassy-data/package-data/volumes/bitcoind/assets/28.1.0.2/compat/bitcoin.conf.template

Add a section at the bottom.

## CUSTOM PARAMETERS
maxuploadtarget=512

Save the configuration (CTRL-O to save, CTRL-X to exit)

Restart your Knots service using the UI

Verify that your change to the template has been applied as your bitcoin startup configuration:

sudo podman exec -it bitcoind.embassy less /root/.bitcoin/bitcoin.conf

or if you want to operate within the container:

sudo podman exec -it bitcoind.embassy bash
less /root/.bitcoin/bitcoin.conf
(other commands - BE CAREFUL NOT TO CORRUPT YOUR CONTAINER)
exit

I stayed over the weekend and had the opportunity to speak with the owner, Bobbi Jo, about bitcoin.

I gave her the basic elevator pitch of the problems bitcoin solves and how great it is for merchants.

She was curious to see it in action so I had her download Muun wallet and sent her $10 over lightning.

It impressed her how fast and easy it was along with virtually no fees that she said she would accept bitcoin as payment for my room so she could start stacking and learn more.

She’s got some work to do before opening up bitcoin payments for the public, but she’s on the path.
