fully agree but afaik the first users of fedi servers built these spaces in order to have "social media" that was away from most of the public. they had strict moderation to keep people who might cause any friction out. this culture lives on. I always feel like I'm engaged in some kind of gentrification here.

(also messaging here feels more private even if it's usually just as public as a reply to a blog post)

this is kinda the big conversation we don't fully have here. social networking vs social media. small vs big fedi. this confusion/disagreement slows down everything else. ultimately imo the people who gave mastodon etc critical mass did so to escape the big fedi idea, but in so doing, built the best possible tool to do big social media well. ironic.

I feel like a lot of this stuff could be better understood with long ongoing conversations between people on both sides, but that's what I've been saying about AT vs AP too. it's not so much that I think anybody is wrong but that the other sides (yea I'm biased) haven't thought some of this stuff through as much.

my dream is hashtags work like subreddits. that aspects of lemmy become part of the standard social news feed experience. flow plus sortable and ranked replies.
