I started to look into wireguard but ended up not needing it. Seems like it could replace tailscale with some work.

Tailscale is built on wireguard. You can replicate the functionality using wireguard configs, but Tailscale makes it so easy.

Nostrvpn can make the Tailscale servers unnecessary by storing configs and state in relays.

The beauty of Tailscale and nostrvpn is the flat mesh they can create while all nodes can be unreliably available, and changing IPs.
