@nprofile1q... - In my own experience, I've found that the old fashioned incandescent bulbs generally lasted about their rated lifespans, but that CFL bulbs always fall way short of their rated lifespans, often lasting LESS than an equivalent incandescent bulb.

I don't have enough history with LED bulbs yet to make this determination.

I also know that a defective fixture/lamp/whatever can ruin your bulbs but make it look like the bulbs are the problem. That's a possibility to consider, too.

@nprofile1q... - We tend to have light bulbs go out in groups during a relatively short period of time; like '3 within 6 weeks then none for a year and a half' kind of thing.

Moved into the house, put in all energy-saving bulbs (all at the same time from the same big pack). So, after like 20,000 hours, for example, they reach the end of their life. They were all made at the same time and installed at the same time, so that means they die at about the same time. #MysterySolved

Well here’s a wildly depressing thought. https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/2026/08/reading-crisis-postliterate-age/687618/?gift=InsbWW4XEqUifC2mWJyv2Jhjdh4pIHHwOEPQun5Ni0E

@nprofile1q... - That was interesting. I did read the whole thing. All. The. Way. Through. ... even though she made her point at least a half dozen times. The idea had been wrapped up and I thought I was at the end, but then there would be a new section.

I read a huge amount as a kid, but then my second year at university demanded so much very heavy and dense reading that it killed all interest in me towards reading for pleasure and it has never returned. So I guess that makes me postliterate.

Seeing all the folks in Europe posting about "ZOMFG it's so hot!" makes me think that they're at the stage of air conditioning that the US was in 1980.

Any of us oldsters alive back then can remember the Mother of All Heat Waves and the death toll numbers getting higher each night on the evening news.

Air conditioning became near universal here after that.

We used to help contain these things, but then Elon destroyed USAID, and now flights with US bound people who may have been exposed are being diverted to Dulles, so this all going as well as expected....

@nprofile1q... - My criticism of this news article is that it plays right into the hands of the MAGA folks who have had a very valid complaint all along: "Why is it that the rest of the world expects the US to take care of everything while they sit back and live high on the hog?"

I think it's great the U.S. has historically stepped up to the task, but I've also noticed (as far back as the 1990s) that many places, particularly Europe, have just stepped away from the plate and taken us for granted.

The full moon is at a major lunar standstill in its 18.6 year cycle, so I went out and took a photo of the moon through the clouds. In layman's terms it means the moon is rising in the furthest south(east) position on the horizon. ... Of course, growing up in northwest New Mexico we learned all about this and how lunar standstills were a Big Deal With Capital Letters to the Ana'sazi people.
