My microwave has an "auto sensor" button. You put something in, hit the auto sensor button, and it says "soup" and you hit start. Whatever you put in, it says "soup".

@nprofile1q... I suspect it's actually *asking* you what you're cooking, and it uses an appropriate process for that food to know when it's done. When it says "1 SOUP" there's probably a control you can poke to move to "2 SANDWICH" or something before you press start?

@nprofile1q... @nprofile1q... once the company I worked for resold access to their fancy leased line to another company in the building. They came complaining it wasn't working one day and I took a look. Everything seemed fine at our end, but their firewall blocked pings so it was hard to check the link to them. However, nmap had this stealth mode that did a clever trick to detect open ports behind a firewall - so I sent them a list of open ports on their internal boxes to show the link worked...

Ok, a question for #database #dbms nerds. Many years ago I worked on a join order optimizer that used a heuristic formula to estimate the number of rows produced by an equijoin, based on the number of rows in the two tables being joined and the number of distinct values in the join keys. This formula came from an academic paper, but I can't remember what the formula was or find the paper. Does this ring a bell for anyone? Boosts appreciated...
