I have spent *months* trying to detangle the corporate and personal history of the Linotype company(ies) and how each person was involved for my book.

Using primary sources, secondary sources, and several different computer programs, I am getting close to finishing a timeline that is backed by facts and not contradicting each other.

It might drive me 🤪 in the end, but it is essential to understanding the complex (and human) story of such an amazing invention.

No one can actually decipher these Claude usage reports and that is part of the point, right? Because this is all nonsense to me.

(and if you’re just going to be snarky about not using AI at all for anything, ever, just don’t reply please because I can’t just stick my head in the sand forever)

Did you know that Linotype made a competing machine to the Ludlow in the 1930s?

It was called the APL: All-Purpose Linotype, and it was basically a total failure.

Most print shops with a Linotype already had a Ludlow for headline typecasting and the APL was more expensive and more complicated.

The APL was around for only five years and then quietly discontinued with only 200 machines or so sold.

It’s Sunday. Why not spend some of your day reading about the earliest European san serif fonts?

Start with @nprofile1q...’s great “On Erbar and Early Geometric Sans Serifs”: https://cjtype.com/dunbar/#research

Then read @nprofile1q...’s “A short history of geometric sans”: https://web.archive.org/web/20230326055648/https://www.fontshop.com/content/short-intro-to-geometric-sans

And follow up with @nprofile1q...’s wonderful writing about my personal favs, ”On Condensed Geometric Sans Serifs”: https://cjtype.com/dunbar-design-repository/articles/on-condensed-geometric-sans-serifs-by-florian-hardwig/

I remember my Typography 1 teacher telling me to find this poem and typesetting as an example of the power of type.

It would have been the year 2002 or so, and I think it took me *ages* to find it on the Internet.

Yesterday was the first day that my family burned ZERO fossil fuels for the entire day.

I e-biked to the coffeeshop in the morning, and we ran all of our family errands (lots of back-to-school prep) in our new electric car.

I know for some people, this is just regular life, but I’m personally excited to make this more of our regular life.
