Long story short, burning eggshells smell a lot like burning hair, and I discovered that I'm a "run toward the gunfire" person.

Signups are open for Oregon-area motorcyclists to volunteer for event patrols for four events this year. See the link for details. I would pay special attention to the Chef's Cycle event in Bend at the beginning of June. This is a long-distance bicycling fundraiser, which brings in chefs from around the country and world and raises money to address childhood hunger. It takes place over two days, and we are lodged and fed (fed well, according to the riders who volunteered last year). Being a cycling event, it's not an overnight thing like Hood to Coast, and you will have plenty of opportunities to upshift out of second gear.

@nprofile1q... The squirrels are 100% unafraid of the cats. They seem to understand how glass works, and will stand right outside the window, making fools out of my three sleek black death machines. The crow? Possibly wary of the cats, but in this case it felt more about wanting to be at eye level with me.

When we moved in, one of the (many, many) things the previous owners left behind was a glass jar about a third full of stale peanuts, with the words "for crow" written on the lid.

I left a few nuts out in obvious places a few times, but all I saw were squirrels, who would take some, leave most, and give me this look like "You're doing it wrong." Then, yesterday evening, I was walking along the side of the house and I saw a crow perched on the fencepost, looking pointedly at me. The crow watched me walk to the door, and go inside to retrieve the jar. I came back out and placed some peanuts on a flat rock on the ground, but the crow gave me the same look as the squirrel: "You're doing it wrong."

So I put some peanuts on the fencepost, and that was acceptable. Today I'm going to see about something a little nicer than stale peanuts.
