Someone asked me the other day if #accessibility has been getting better over the last years.
I feel that's a difficult question to answer. Relatively speaking, maybe, in some aspects, yes it has.
But if I'm brutally honest, better does by no means mean good.
Right now, I'd say accessibility as a whole can be described thusly:

People have, on a whole, felt largely ignored and essentially akin to a dog begging for scraps at the dinner table. Maybe every so often someone somewhere decides to do something, but in general, accessibility is ignored, deprioritized, devalued and at times derided by those who should often know better.
Accessibility is in a state where people would rather use a planet-destroying, ethically questionable slot machine to fix things, because the human slot machine of getting people to care has far worse odds and requires far more effort with often nothing to show for it.
And yet, that probably is still better than a decade ago.

I just posted a LinkedIn post about doing #accessibility for ... y'know .. the actual people affected rather than making those the secondary focus below compliance, metrics and dashboards. The comparison of playing a piano with a clipboard may have been made.
If a few managerial staff spontaneously combust in a fit of self-righteous corporate rage because of this, I'm very sorry.

I tried to read this. I had to read past several advertisements while doing so, and was finally dismayed to read I had to start a free trial to read the story about the reading crisis and the fact people don't read anymore. I find this delightfully ironic.

Yeah sorry, but no.
Even IF it was ever ok to just unrecoverably delete someone's work (it isn't, this is literally what malware does), you're potentially hitting users who aren't exactly thrilled to be using AI either. And we all know that when shit hits the fan, those users will get blamed, not the AI and not the maintainer of this library. You're getting people fired, destroying businesses that people need to live and outright being a massive asshole by doing this, I don't care what your ethics are.
Don't get me wrong, I am, at best, a reluctant AI user. But this is not the way.

Lichess has always been the most #accessible #chess website for #blind #screenreader users. You can play games there, analyze them, even do puzzles. What you can't do, though, is learn the absolute basics there.
The tutorials are not accessible, and this has been a problem for years from what I know.
I'm fixing that. I have the platform running locally, and already fixed the " collect the stars"-style tutorials so they work with screen readers. Once i'm happy with these changes I will submit a pull request upstream... let's hope they feel up to merging it once I'm done here. #lichess #accessibility #blindChess #webdev #openSource #tech
