The fag represents the people not the government. Ideally, and almost all soldiers are idealist, they serve the constitution and the peole of the United States. In reality that is not the case; but ...
Totally agree ideologically, but the government deceives people with the flag, and they deceive soldiers with war propaganda and conditioning for service. It is impossible to separate the state from the symbol of the flag, the same as its impossible to separate the notion of borders from the notion of a state. The flag is the symbol used to identify a population within a border, but it also represents their government whether it obeys their will or not.
This is the same question as what does the flag of iran represent? Is it the people, or the nation's government? Why does the flag always change when the government changes? Is it still a flag of the people?
