Was just pondering things and my ponderer pondered why there are not little RaspberryPI boxes (or whatever HW) that are literally plug and pray Nostr relays. Like just set this little guy on your desk boot it add some basic info and boom, home relay without needing a VPS or having to run the stack on your system. I dunno why I thought about this, but seems like a cool idea. Could also be a cool way to increase adoption... maybe. Probably a terrible idea and I am quite certain someone will point out why. <shrug>.

I use a RaspberryPi 4, mostly it's been a good experience but recently the circuit board fried due to an electricsl fault somewhere. The box isn't the bottleneck; delivery is. You need a reliable public endpoint or a Tor bridge. A Pi on NAT is just a local cache. Build a bridge to a VPS and the local node becomes a true sovereign edge.

The problem with this is the fact that relays need domain names and have to be accessed from the external internet. I guess you could have a "relay" that is just your personal backup thing or something like that. There is value in this, but only for power users, and not that much even, I think.

I used nostr like this for a year, then I liked it so much I put it online and made it so others could spin it up to try. A relay that works well for this is newlay. @ https://code.relay.tools/opensauce/newlay combined with RelayTools-android as the client is a very nice way to nostr.
