When I was younger, my father was a teacher. He would build model rockets each year with his 5th-grade science class and launch them from the playground. The whole school would gather to watch each kid launch their creations. They used paper towel tubes for the bodies and aluminum pie pans for the nose cones and fins. Toilet paper for wadding, and shopping bags for parachutes.
I was fortunate enough to have a garage full of spare model rocket parts and would launch all kinds of monstrosities from the cornfield behind our house.
Even now, my brothers and I, along with my dad, still get together every Father’s Day to launch rockets. This year will be the first with my 1-year-old son joining us.
