Actually, he was not interested in the financials - he sold a few, but it was never his priority. His words were purely observational as an indictment of the attitude that seems to prevail among those who consider themselves connoisseurs of art.
It was his first love and what he went back to when ill health meant he could no longer work.
My attitude toward writing is similar. Who cares whether I ever sell anything? I write for my purposes, not as a commercial endeavour.
