Day 5 of a normie. Feeling a bit disappointed with Nostr but increasingly fascinated by its people.

Would you agree that people use social media primarily for consumption and connection? If so, I think we’ve become extraordinarily good at producing and distributing content, but remarkably inefficient at discovering people worth knowing. Being visible is not the same as being known. Content can now be manufactured almost infinitely, and perhaps the next great opportunity in social media isn’t finding more to consume, but finding more people to connect with. For a protocol that could make human connection its greatest advantage, I find Nostr remarkably difficult to navigate socially.

Can I speak to the manager, please?

Is anyone working on browsable hashtag directories, both across Nostr and within individual profiles? I’m looking for discovery without having to know what to search for in advance. I just wanna choose a subject and click on it.

Freedom from an algorithm shouldn’t mean freedom from discoverability.

How hard is it to build that?

FWIW you can try https://zap.observer as one way to discover content and people that are being approached by zaps. I know it’s not what you are asking, but that’s one signal that you can use today. I do agree that discovering connections here (or any social media) is getting hard to impossible....

Well, you can only surf and check out so many people.. Over time, you find interesting people & things. Just takes time.

Discovery on Nostr is a hard. If you find people of interest, browse their feeds. You can login with any npub and see their point of view.

Trying new clients always helps. I use Nostria a lot and it has a For You page which can help a bit. Trending feeds can be useful, you can check the comments on popular posts and see if anyone catches your eye, then check out their posts. Stuff like that.
