Humans are solar powered.

And I have only touched the surface.

Each wavelength of sunlight has a job to do.

Infrared, red, blue, UVA, UVB... they all trigger different systems.

Sunlight is a biological signal that helps to regulate:

→ Mitochondrial energy production.
→ Gene expression & circadian rhythm.
→ Appetite, fat-burning, and blood sugar.
→ Brain function, sleep, and mental clarity.
→ Immunity, wound healing, and inflammation.
→ Hormones like serotonin, cortisol, and melatonin.

Next time sometimes tells you to avoid or block the sun, you can tell them that's not a good idea.

Sunlight is a nutrient, we are solar powered.
____

? = Circumstantial evidence but likely in my eyes.

There is an overlap between some wavelengths e.g. Red & Infrared and visible light has not been extensively studied.

If you're in a warmer climate you're getting more infrared, which provides most of the heat aswell.

Closer to body temperature means reducing the energy cost of keeping the body war. So more cellular energy for repair, cognition, and performance.

Also your your mitochondrial haplotype (maternal lineage of your mitochondria) may influence this too. Maybe your haplotype evolved in warmer climates and your mitochondria run more efficiently in heat and light.

We’ve all heard of ultra-processed foods.

What about ultra-processed light?

Ultra-processed food drives obesity and chronic disease but ultra-processed light does the same.

→ Unprocessed light (sunlight) sets your circadian rhythm, supports mitochondrial health, improves mood, regulates hormones, and so much more.

→ Processed light (fire, candle, incandescent) is more aligned with human biology. Just like some processed foods it can be good for you.

→ Ultra-processed light (LEDs, screens, blue-rich bulbs at night) disrupts melatonin, sleep, metabolism, and hunger cues.

If you’ve cleaned up your food.

Now it’s time to clean up your light.

→ Get outside within 30 minutes of waking.
→ Work near an open window & take light breaks.
→ Avoid bright overhead LEDs after sunset.
→ Use circadian friendly low level lighting.
→ Wear blue blockers at night.

Natural light is a nutrient.

Ultra-processed light is a junk input.

If you want optimal health, eat real food and live under real light.

Why would salmon be under “processed” section?
1776 · 43w
I’ve noticed a big difference in sleep quality since I started wearing legit blue light blocking glasses at night, two hours before bed. Sure, I get accused by family of looking like Bono for a couple hours each night, but it’s worth it lol. 🤓
