Update on my boat project in Brazil. The stem needs to be faired/beveled, I only use manual tools and take my time as not to avoid fuckups. The japanese saw, chisel and manual plane is perfect for this (just need to keep them sharpened). The pine planking needs to be scarphed together to make them long enough, I made a simple clamp for this purpose. I use epoxy resin as glue. The boards will be planed later to appropriate thickness.
This is a lot of work, but I'm getting there.

Norway won against Brazil. I Cheered for my Norwegian cousins. I am persona non grata now in Brazil.

I've been working on a boat project since 2023. It nears completion every time I spend a month or so in Brazil. I use mostly manual tools, although I have some powertools as well. If you take your time, a lot can be done with a good stanley plane, chisels and a japanese saw (my favorite). Here are a few pictures, I will upload more later.

Today I made this mallet and I named it after my son who is at the age where he loves to smash things.

I had to deliver bad news to someone this morning.

Delivering bad news is one of medicine's hardest duties. Every instinct pulls you toward softening the blow.
Honesty, however painful, is the only ethical path. It's what people deserve.
What stays with me is not the delivering, but the receiving of the news. I have sat with someone absorbing news that may mark the beginning of the end of their lives, and see someting remarkable happen.
In their most vulnerable state, when their future takes a rapid turn, something surfaces which I can only describe as quiet dignity or grace.

This leaves me with a renewed sense of what human beings are capable of when faced with death.
It's humbling, and it is never easy. It will always be one of the most profound privileges of this work.

I do however feel drained.
