this is extremely rudimentary of course, but basically it's nothing more than a key/value store, a regex, a string concatenation and some Maps and arrays in a trenchcoat

split every name into something approximating a 'word', also generate a concatenation of every 2 subsequent 'words' and add that to the 'words', then store a reference from each of those words to the original item's ID

then you do the same splitting for the search query, get every reference from the index DB for every 'word' in the query, order the reference IDs by how many of them matched and put the one with the most matches against the query at the top, fetch the actual underlying record (the name and the URL) for the top 10 results and show them

and presto, that's it

There is no meaningful difference between "border security" and the idea of "one group primitively kills another group when they enter their territory".

We've just dressed it up in institutional language and outsourced the cruelty to those who like doing it, so that we don't have to watch it happen and can pretend it doesn't. So that we can pretend it is 'humane' and 'reasonable'.

Just like I'm sure every group historically made up some moral justification for killing other groups.

there's a really interesting correlation I've noticed, which is that the people complaining about the codeberg AI decision almost invariably demonstrate that they don't understand the concept of a member association

they call a vote a 'survey', or they describe it as a choice from 'high on up', or they describe codeberg as a 'company' or 'business', or they complain that as a (regular) user they weren't asked for their opinion, or they come up with the most basic-ass 'concerns' about how it would be soooo easy to manipulate the vote because 'anyone can vote' (which is not how it works), and so on, and so forth

like, there's not *literally* a 1:1 correlation between "AI bro" and "fundamentally doesn't understand democratic mechanisms and structures" but it's nor far off either

@nprofile1q... They may simply have been misremembering? Having replaced "30 FPS" with "60 FPS" in the mental slot for "meeting performance target" and only remembering the fact that they used to hit whatever-the-performance-target-was-at-the-time.

(I believe the 60 FPS target mainly originated from feeling a lot 'smoother', less like you're watching a recording, which probably coincided with flatscreens because around that time display fidelity also got better fast, and eg. less ghosting means you don't get 'natural motion smoothing' to cover up the relative jank of 30 FPS)

To spell it out a bit more for those who need it: the AI bros don't *need* Codeberg. They are getting so angry just because someone is daring to tell them "no". Because someone is daring to dissent in a way that matters in some way, even if it's a small way.

Because they are straying from the religion, and going against its dogma that "the AI future" is above questioning. Because they are feeling threatened by it, because it calls into question their own beliefs and whether they may have been wrong about them.

I think folks should be a lot more concerned about the aggressive response towards Codeberg from AI bros, than they currently are.

Not because of the disagreement, or even the "AI" itself, but because Codeberg is simply too small to critically matter to anyone's functioning or livelihood - it's a small community project! - and so the extreme intensity of the response says a lot about the true motivations and expectations of the "AI" crowd, particularly around power.

If you run an AI company and then criticize a slop ban without even acknowledging that it was the members who voted on it and instead imply it was a decision 'from up high', then it's pretty clear what your intentions are.
