The latest Cities: Skylines 2 thing is arguably a direct result of Colossal Order choosing to go all in on Unity's Data-Oriented Tech Stack before it was ready (it will never be ready)

The biggest issue that a lot of people reviewing games have with dissatisfying level design is "backtracking". Which is something I actually can't say having been consciously bothered by in any games...

@nprofile1q... imo the difference between "good" and "bad" backtracking is tedium

if I'm traversing the same area multiple times, but new events occur, or I can access new parts of the area because I have new abilities, or something is mechanically different about the area, that can be good

if I have to walk for five minutes through an empty landscape where I've found/defeated everything, OR if I have to slog through exactly the same enemies that I already slogged through once to get here, that's bad

we're in the process of migrating live data updates to an archive format to reduce the number of network requests, and we're tentatively just using zip because it's simple and universal and does everything we need

we build everything on osx because ios is one of our target platforms

an engineer on another team testing the new format: "why is it creating this `_MACOSX` subfolder with a bunch of stuff in it" 😭
