@nprofile1q... The language has changed from "spontaneous" and "nonspontaneous" to "thermodynamically favorable" and "not favorable," which makes more sense in my mind (more clear about what's happening).

I think working free energy into everything once enthalpy is done in thermochem makes a lot of sense. Relating to the equilibrium constant at the end of the year would wrap it all up nicely. Next time...

Today in the classroom:

First year chem will make their own pH scale. They'll convert between H+ molarity and pH for various substances and plot them on an 80 cm piece of receipt paper. They'll then add some color and artistic spice.

Second year is still slogging thermodynamics. I don't love this unit...I don't have great labs for it. We'll do my petri dish battery lab or calorimetry to break it up a little, but I need to update my procedures and analysis.

Today in the classroom:

First year chem is going to do some notes on acid/base reactions and how to calculate pH from H+ concentration. No Kw or any equilibrium, just a high-level overview of what pH actually means.

Second year chem did a bunch yesterday with enthalpy, entropy, and free energy. Today, we have a short period because of an assembly, so they'll work on some practice problems.
